Dealing with UPI Fraud: Legal Steps and Expert Advice

The most convenient way of transaction is the UPI. Most of the people are using the UPI for their payments digitally. Even the government has deployed a lot of money to make these transactions safer for individuals. One single QR code or the wrong transaction to the wrong ID can increase the issues for an individual. The lawyers are there to get money back for their loss. The legal system is made to give individuals free access. UPI fraud is not only an accidental mistake, sometimes hackers use the bypass system to take the money from your account. This blog will clarify the details of the UPI fraud and how to recover money from the fraud.

Common Types of UPI Frauds

Scammers use various tactics to fool users into sharing sensitive details or authorizing fraudulent transactions.

  1. Hacking Scams
    • Fraudsters send messages, emails, or links pretending to be from official banks or payment services.
    • These links redirect victims to fake websites that steal their credentials.
  2. Fake Customer Calls
    • Scammers fool you as customer service representatives and ask users to share their UPI PIN or OTP.
    • Once they are fully convinced, they transfer money from the victim’s account.
  3. QR Code Scams
    • Fraudsters send QR codes asking victims to scan them to receive money.
    • However, scanning these QR codes initiates a payment instead of receiving funds.

Immediate Actions After UPI Fraud

If you notice any unauthorized transactions in your account you need to take immediate action. This can prevent further losses. These steps are:

  • Inform your bank or payment service provider (Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, etc.) immediately.
  • Most banks have a fraud helpline that works 24/7.
  • Request them to block your UPI services temporarily.
  • Report the Fraud on the NPCI Portal
  • The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) provides a customer support system for UPI fraud victims.
  • Visit the official NPCI website and file a complaint.
  • Lodge a Complaint with the Cybercrime Portal
  • File a complaint on the Government of India’s cybercrime portal
  • Attach evidence such as transaction details, SMS notifications, and email details.
  • Register an FIR with the Police
  • If the hacked amount is significant, lodge an FIR at your nearest police station.
  • Give all available evidence, like the bank statements and screenshots of fraud activity.
  • If you suspect a SIM swap fraud, inform your telecom service provider and request a SIM block or reissue.

So the legal steps are present there to recover the money. For this one needs to follow some steps. These steps are:

1. Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Guidelines
